In this edition of Lauren's Weekly Favorite, I am highlighting The UK List - specifically noting the best selling albums in the United Kingdom.
In the original post, I featured the top 5 best selling albums. Yet on Wikipedia, 60 were listed in total.
And so in this Lauren's Weekly Favorite post, I am continuing where I left off on The UK List.
Greatest Hits by Queen is the best selling album in the United Kingdom with a certification of 21x Platinum. However, did you know that Queen's Greatest Hits II is also on the list? Greatest Hits II is listed at No. 10 with a certification of 13x Platinum and 3,990,000 in sales.
In the list of best selling albums in the United Kingdom, The Beatles are highlighted more than once. Ironically however, the first album to be recorded in the list falls in No. 3 for the album, Sgt.'s Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band with a certification of 17x Platinum. The album, 1, is listed at No. 22 with a certification of 11x Platinum and 3,230,000 in sales.
21 by Adele is certified 17x Platinum. However, did you know that Adele is listed more than once with best selling albums in the UK? 25 is listed at No. 14 with a certification of 11x Platinum and 3,500,000 in sales.
Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits is listed at No. 8 with a certification of 14x Platinum and 4,350,000 in sales. (I personally know of Dire Straits from their hit single, "Sultans of Swing.")
Back to Black by Amy Winehouse is listed at No. 13 with a certification of 13x Platinum and 3,940,000 in sales. Amy Winehouse sadly passed away in 2011, but her impressive honors live on (refer to Wikipedia).
Back to Bedlam by James Blunt is listed at No. 18 with a certification of 11x Platinum and 3,360,000 in sales. James Blunt is not only an award-winning musician with Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of Bristol (2016), he also served in the British Army. (James Blunt's full and intriguing background can be found on Wikipedia.)
Ed Sheeran is listed as one of the highest certified music artists for a digital single. With this said, Ed Sheeran's album, X, is also listed as a best selling album in the UK - No. 20, 11x Platinum, and 3,380,000 in sales.
Spice by The Spice Girls is listed at No. 30 with a certification of 10x Platinum and 2,960,000 in sales. The Spice Girls defined 1990's pop culture, but with some controversy. They were the musical act on an episode of Saturday Night Live and were poorly received by the audience because of their lack of performance. Of the five spice girls, Victoria Beckham stands out the most for her impressive fashion career.
Coldplay is profoundly noted on the best selling albums in the United Kingdom list - A Rush of Blood to the Head (No. 33, 9x Platinum), X&Y (No. 41, 9x Platinum), and Parachutes (No. 43, 9x Platinum).
...But Seriously by Phil Collins is listed at No. 40 with a certification of 9x Platinum and 2,750,000 in sales.
Ladies & Gentlmen: The Best of by George Michael is listed at No. 53 with a certification of 8x Platinum and 2,500,000 in sales.
To conclude -
There are a select few on the best selling albums in the United Kingdom list that I did not mention in this post as the musicians are not from England and I wanted to focus solely on British artists.
The full UK list may seem exhausting, but the backgrounds of the musicians and albums truly are intriguing.
