Set List Special Edition - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1992 No. 7

 The Yardbirds

Inducted by The Edge

(Wikipedia)

The Yardbirds are an English rock band as of 1963.  The core of the band included Keith Relf (harmonica, vocals), Jim McCarty (drums), Chris Dreja (guitar, bass), and Paul Samwell-Smith (bass, producer).  The core dissolved and led to a revolving door of members,

For a brief period of time, The Yardbirds featured Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck.  The band is credited for the successful careers each guitarist went on to have.  (All three ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists.)

The Yardbirds ranked No. 89 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

The band played blues and pop styles but paved the way for psychedelic rock and hard rock...even punk rock, progressive rock, and heavy metal influences.

The background of The Yardbirds is broken down by major guitarists - the band with Eric Clapton, the band with Jeff Beck, and the band with Jimmy Page.  A later category includes the formation of Led Zeppelin by Jimmy Page.  Each broken down section tells its own story.

Outside of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, there is no mention of honors or other accolades.

At the end of the day, history is prominent over awards,

Set List Special Edition - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1992 No. 6

 Sam & Dave

Inducted by Billy Joel

(Wikipedia)

Side note - Billy Joel previously inducted Fats Domino.

Genres considered - Soul, R&B, Southern Soul, Rock and Roll

Sam Moore was known for a higher tenor pitch that was complimented by Dave Prater's deep baritone pitch.  This was best for the duo...

...On a sad note, the two did not compliment each other on an individual base with refusal to speak backstage and all communication was through an intermediary.  Neither looked at the other when performing on stage.  At an eventual point, Sam Moore left the duo to pursue a solo career.

Sam & Dave were further known for impressive live performances.

The "Dynamic Duo" held great influence on such musicians as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Steve Winwood, and many more.

In the 1980s, the Blues Brothers brought back soul, R&B, and blues.  They are best recognized by "Soul Man" and their live acts honoring Sam & Dave.

As with so many other Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Sam & Dave too have a long history.  Should you be interested, follow the Wikipedia link above.

In this post, then, I will highlight due honors for Sam & Dave.

Grammy Award for "Soul Man"

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Vocal Group Hall of Fame
Memphis Music Hall of Fame
Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame

My personal thought regarding Sam & Dave - Their voices complimented each other as musicians.  I can imagine the live acts based on words alone.  Yet, there were so many flaws in the duo's relationship that were not entirely consistent when described by both at separate times.  Music is something to bring joy, fun, and happiness.  Fans are fans for a reason.  Fans grow with favorite musicians as they grow.  They expect only the best when a band, duo, or solo walks on stage and performs.  As Roger Taylor (Duran Duran) once said of the band that in their last performance as the original lineup, they were all in different head spaces.  Every member contributed their part but the positive electricity just wasn't there.  Fans may have felt hope, but DD did not.  I suppose, then, the same could be said of Sam & Dave.

Set List Special Edition - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1992 No. 5

 The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Inducted by Neil Young

(Wikipedia)

The Jimi Hendrix Experience (album)

Disc One - 16 Tracks
1.  Purple Haze
16.  The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice
(Follow the Wikipedia link just above for the full track list.)

17. Star Spangled Banner
(Follow the Wikipedia link just above for the full track list.)

Disc Three - 11 Tracks
1.  Stone Free
11.  Izabella
(Follow the Wikipedia link just above for the full track list.)

Disc F0ur -16 Tracks
1.  Message to Love
16.  Slow Blues
(Follow the Wikipedia link just above for the full track list.)

On Set List, there is little left to be said about so many iconic musicians and their signature songs.  Jimi Hendrix is one of them.  A natural gift left far too soon.  My final thought about Jimi -

Play it!

Set List Special Edition - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1992 No. 4

 The Isley Brothers

Inducted by Little Richard

(Wikipedia)

Side Note - Little Richard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and also inducted Otis Redding in the Class of 1988.

The Isley Brothers consist of O'Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, and Ronald Isley.  (The fourth sibling, Vernon, joined but passed away shortly thereafter.)

Noteworthy mentions -

Added to Hollywood's RockWalk

"Shout" - Sold over one million copies

"Twist and Shout" - Top 20 single

Grammy Award for "It's Your Thing"

In the whole of the 1970s, the Isley Brothers recorded and released top albums, including the No. 1 The Heat Is On.

In the 1980s, the group (which would also include Ernie Isley, Marvin Isley, and Rudolph's brother-in-law, Chris Jasper) began to dismantle.  In 1983, Ernie, Marven, and Chris briefly worked as a trio, but success was not meant to be.  In 1986, O'Kelly passed away. Rudolph and Ronald released two albums before Rudolph left to join a Christian ministry in 1989.

Ronald brought back many of the former members - Ernie and Marvin.  Although Marvin later left due to health issues, Ronald and Ernie achieved duo success with such albums as Mission to Please (1996), Eternal (2001), and Body Kiss (2003).

Ronald and Ernie continue to perform as a duo to date.

Honors -

Over 18 million records sold in the U.S. alone

4 Top 10 singles

16 albums reached the Top 40 ... 13 albums of the 16 have been certified Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum in the U.S.

Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (2003)

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2014)

Grammy Hall of Fame - "Shout" and "Twist and Shout"

With notes and honors aside, follow the Wikipedia link above should you want to read more.

"...personification of country music..."

(Wikipedia)

Jump right in -

Johnny Cash's signature songs include "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line," "Ring of Fire," "Get Rhythm," and "Man in Black."

Country Music Association Awards, Grammy Awards, etc.

Kennedy Center Honors (1996)
Johnny Cash noted that "his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame was his greatest professional achievement..."

National Medal of Arts (2001)

Johnny Cash's personal and musical history as well as his discography and film work are overwhelming in detail, so refer to Wikipedia if y0u would like to read more.

Shout Out Friday

In months past, I went live with the peak of concert excerpts from a variety of established and iconic musicians.  The frigid air on this November Friday recalls the crisp October air settled into New York City's Times Square when Duran Duran stopped by Good Morning America while on tour for Astronaut.

In this launch edition of Shout Out Friday, let's go some place a bit musically warmer - "Hotel California."

- Certifications -

Certified Gold in the U.S. (Physical release)

Certified Silver in France

Certified Platinum in Canada, Japan, and the U.S. (digital)

Certified 2x Platinum in Italy and the UK

Dear readers and passersby,

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I will be taking a brief break from Set List - Wednesday, November 24 and Thursday,  November 25.

I will return on Friday, November 26.

- Lauren

Classic Versus Tuesday

In this edition of Classic Versus Tuesday, I am comparing Andy Taylor's version of a classic and Duran Duran's version without Andy.  The song - "Planet Earth."

Do Duran Duran fans wish to have Andy back in the band or should fans officially move on?

 Ike & Tina Turner

Ike & Tina Turner as a duo  began in the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s.  Although their marriage was heated and ultimately led to divorce, the musical history is worth reading.  Follow the link above.

Tina earned the Kennedy Center Honors in 2005.

Ike is inducted into many halls of fame - Blues Hall of Fame, Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, and Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame.

Honors recognizing both Ike and Tina as well as individually is the best way to conclude this post and the Class of 1991.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1991 No. 6

Jimmy Reed

Inducted by ZZ Top

Jimmy Reed was a success in terms charting - several landed on Billboard Rhythm and Blues and on Billboard Hot 100.

Jimmy Reed was on influence on such artists as Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and Hank Williams Jr.

The majority of the Wikipedia article was spent on Reed's discography - singles and select albums.  The length either way is impressive and proof that he was deserving of being a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
