What is the NRJ Music Award?
Peter Gabriel's critical acclaim, awards, and nominations are forever impressive - from the established Grammy Awards to award ceremonies unique to Britain and so many more in between.
Yet, I want to take a step back and briefly return to Phil Collins for two reasons - wealth and award presentation. Both are impressive.
In 2012, Phil Collins was reportedly the second wealthiest drummer "in the world," second to Ringo Starr. His estimated revenue was 120 million in British pounds (USD conversion to well over $155 million). "...one of the 25 wealthiest people in the British music industry..." (Source - Wikipedia)

NRJ is a French radio station. NRJ presents awards to honor the best in French and worldwide music. The NRJ Awards date to 2000. Premier winners include such names as Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, U2, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and so many more.
In 2002, at the 4th NRJ Music Awards, Phil Collins was awarded the prestigious NRJ Award of Honor for the Career.

My take away -
The music industry is a global industry. Award ceremonies honoring musicians are global ceremonies. The music fan base in all genres unites the globe as one.
NRJ may be local to France, but previous winners reflect international backgrounds.
The music industry truly is impressive and long-lasting.

My take away -
Genesis would not have been without Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. As with Peter Gabriel, I cannot imagine Phil Collins anticipating his solo success being permanently etched into the music industry. Peter Gabriel, though. His awards and nominations are well deserved. In fact, I will conclude on this note-

Career After Genesis - Peter Gabriel 1986 III
In this final post in the Career After Genesis series (where I truly could have gone on for some time), I am opting to conclude with "Mercy Street" from Peter Gabriel's So album (1986) to offer a fairly significant change of pace from "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time."
There is a far cry in tone from "Sledgehammer," "Big Time," "Mercy Street," "Don't Give Up," and even "Red Rain."
"Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" are upbeat and catchy. "Mercy Street," "Don't Give Up," and "Red Rain" are mellow and perhaps emotionally driven.
Nonetheless, with such a successful career after leaving Genesis, I find that such songs as "Sledgehammer," "Big Time," "Mercy Street," "Don't Give Up," and "Red Rain" are great examples of Peter Gabriel essentials.
With this said, let's go back to "Mercy Street."

Anticipation - The Audience Will Know
In this edition of Set List Sunday Favorite, I am highlighting In the Air Tonight Live - Phil Collins with a unique twist.
If you know Billy Squier by one simple lyric, you know him well. If you know Peter Frampton by guitar and one lyric, you know him well.
If you know Duran Duran by one single instrumental stroke, you know the band well.
Anticipation, on the other hand...
Okay, every Duran Duran fan knows that "Rio" is the conclusion to a full concert set list. The audience loves the performance, but anticipates for the spectacular show for one song alone.
And then there is the drum solo by Phil Collins in "In the Air Tonight" - whether recorded or live.
Let's go with a live concert. He enters the stage and begins singing. He hits every note with a hint of exaggeration. He is calm. He knows what the audience is waiting for. He casually walks to the drum kit. And then the audience's anticipation is profoundly answered with a loud and powerful drum solo - iconic to the song and a permanent staple in music.
A mix of talents in one song by one person alone - and live - makes Phil Collins and "In the Air Tonight" nearly genius in musical status.
Phil Collins is listed in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time for a reason and "In the Air Tonight" is excellent proof of that reason.
Roger Taylor noted Phil Collins and "In the Air Tonight" for good reason.
My take away from this edition of Set List Sunday Favorite -
Anticipation at a concert keeps the energy electric and only fuels the band's performance.
For example, in Duran Duran's Live from London concert, Simon Le Bon suggested a bridge to "I Don't Want Your Love" by encouraging Roger Taylor to set the beat. Simon encouraged Roger again. And then Andy Taylor got involved with a striking tone on his guitar. And then John and Nick. Andy, John, Nick, and Roger knew what Simon wanted from them and Simon knew how the audience would react. "No, I like more noise than that..." A declaration from Simon to get the audience to scream as loud as physically possible while the band backed off from their instruments. In that one moment, the audience anticipated something amazing. Simon followed through.
Phil Collins did exactly the same thing in "In the Air Tonight." He knew the audience anticipated the drum solo. He kept the pace and beat of the song in check to keep the anticipation going. And then he followed through.
In one word - speechless.
