Two for Two Tuesday - Edition 5

In today's edition of Two for Two Tuesday, I planned to post Duran Duran's original version of "I Don't Want Your Love" and the remix of "I Don't Want Your Love."  I did not plan to post a live version.  My plans have since changed.

The original version of "I Don't Want Your Love" as performed in Duran Duran's official music video opens with the main lyrics and leads into the catchy "I like noise" segment. 

On the other hand, the live version of "I Don't Want Your Love" as performed at Wembley Stadium in 2004 is entirely opposite.  Although to keep the concert energy going - and at an intense pitch - I can see why "I like noise" would be best.

Of the two, I would say I like both versions.  The music video is intriguing in its opening and somehow makes sense given the lyrics and tone of the song.  The live version is phenomenal when every single instrument is dead silent to hear the audience scream louder than the band.

And so on this Two for Two Tuesday edition, I choose to feature Duran Duran's "I Don't Want Your Love" in its original sense and live sense.

Anything Goes Thursday - Edition 4

On this Anything Goes Thursday, I would like to promote my blog, Couture Tales.  I am certain that the name has come up somewhere in the 2018 archives, but not to the extent that I plan here.

Couture Tales is a short story fiction blog with a fashion theme, from couture to casual to special occasion wear to jewelry to accessories...I could go on but I will let my blog speak for itself.

I launched Couture Tales for three reasons - my love for blogging, my love for writing fiction, and my intrigue for anything fashion...a vicarious intrigue as I am not necessarily a fashionista.

In this month of May, I launched an affiliate marketing account with ShareASale.  My blog source is Couture Tales.  Although I am still new to the concept of professional affiliate marketing, I do consider my efforts as a small business.

The essence of Couture Tales as a short story fiction blog with fashion theme will remain always.  However, I am just adding affiliate marketing into the mix.

Two for Two Tuesday - Royal Edition

In this edition of Two for Two Tuesday, I planned to share Meghan Markle's wedding gown and reception dress as the two for two theme.  I also planned to share the gown and dress as fashion related to music.

I am stuck for words at the moment.  I do know that Meghan's wedding gown was by Givenchy and her reception dress was by Stella McCartney.  Wherever my sources would be to share here is on video and a constant repeat of their vows into "I will."

I doubt I will be remiss if I do not share the photos in this post as the royal wedding and glimpses of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in route to their lively reception have been seen again and again worldwide.  Royalty is not always masked.

I suppose, then, that the best fashion statement I can share here is the official wedding photo in Windsor Palace.  Royalty is well known for fashion, far from akin to Hollywood's red carpet.  The official wedding photo is classic, timeless, and beautifully understated. 

Two words best describe today's Two for Two Tuesday - in love.

Stand By Me

"Stand By Me" is an enduring song for love to last.  For any couple, "Stand By Me" is a sweet song to hear.  For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the enduring song was chosen beyond love to last. 

The established fact that Meghan's father is white and her mother is black is just that...an established, well known fact.

The established fact that "Stand By Me" was written and recorded during the Civil Rights Movement is just that...an established fact.

The established fact that President Abraham Lincoln declared Emancipation Proclamation and an end to slavery is just that...a historically established fact.

The established fact that tension in the air toward all blacks after the Civil War is just that...an established fact.

The established fact that unjust brutal treatment toward all blacks during the Civil Rights Movement is just that...a historically established fact.

People of color deserve equality in all that life has to offer.

Meghan Markle is biracial.  She has firm beliefs and values to promote as a woman of strength, not color. 

Time.com used the word "symbolic" in an article about the significance of "Stand By Me" at the royal wedding.  Symbolic union in a new era of royalty and royal tradition.

Symbolic is a profound word I would like to conclude with.

Saturday Special : Flash Fiction Series 5

Play It : Rock 'n Roll

"Shout it out, Chi-town!  Are you rockin'?"

Screaming yes

"Are you rollin'?"

Screaming yes

"One-two-three hit it!"

The drums alone rocked the Chi-town arena.  The guitars grooved the arena.  The keyboards added an extra layer to the songs and overall experience.  The front man kept the energy rolling.

Rock 'n Roll fan interest to its extreme extent keeps the genre alive and kicking.

In my first post on Set List, I shared an online article listing my Top 10 Favorite Songs By...and I chose Duran Duran.  I am sad to say that the company hosting written articles is no longer in existence, so I cannot retrieve the exact list.  In this post, I will create a new list.

Concert Set List

As of Set List launch in 2010, I often wonder what my ideal concert set list would be.  There would be 13 songs, all filled with profound electricity from stage to fans to pure atmosphere.  Let's see...

This list is a hint of my many favorite songs and, if possible, would be much longer.  Ironically, Nick Rhodes once said the same thing about a pending set list just prior to an upcoming concert.  My guess is if musicians could perform every song they loved, concerts would go on for hours.  My further guess is fans would be fine with that.

And so to sum up, the above 13 songs would be my concert set list.

Wednesday Once Over - Edition 3

On Wake Up Monday, I posted two YouTube videos - "Red Carpet Massacre" and "The Valley."  I meant to follow up with a brief history of the Red Carpet Massacre album, but of course opted to share my first concert experience on May 14, 2008...being the ten year anniversary.

My take away -
I am not one for chart rankings and critic reviews and reception.  I am one for songs and overall albums.  One other song I liked on Red Carpet Massacre was indeed "Falling Down."  Did I like the music video?  Not really because the setting hit a little too close to home.  This in no way meant I denounced the song, though.  I loved the concert on May 14, 2008 and will always feel like it just happened a day ago.  This would be my fan review.

Two for Two Tuesday - Edition 4

I discovered Duran Duran with the release of The Wedding Album...although I was elementary school age, so being a fan was not entirely possible.  I became an official fan with the release of Astronaut, especially when "Reach Up For the Sunrise" was performed live on Good Morning America in their Fall concert series.  I was not able to find the performance on GMA, but found a performance on The Ellen Show...which is ironic because I did not become an official fan of Ellen DeGeneres until 2010...when Duran Duran performed "All You Need Is Now."

In this Two for Two Tuesday, I thought I would look back at the history of both songs as found in their ironic way.

Wake Up Monday - Special Edition

On May 14, 2008, five days after college graduation, my mother and I celebrated with tickets 15 rows back on the far right side of the venue.  This concert was my first ever.  I did not know what to expect...until the opening act came on.  The drums sounded like a fighter jet passing over the building at a very low level.  The electric guitar was indeed electric.  We were relatively close to the speakers...of course, everyone was relatively close to a speaker.  I lost the ability to hear by the end of the night.  My heart pounded out of my chest with every tap of the drum kit.  The opening act set the tone for what to expect when...everyone jumped to their feet when the one and only Duran Duran walked on stage.

Stage lights, audience cameras, action.

The band was touring for Red Carpet Massacre, so some of the songs were from the album.  Some were songs I had not listened to in quite some time and so forgot the lyrics.  Some were classics.

At the halfway point, they left the stage and I remember asking my mom if the concert was over.  This experience was my first, so I truly did not know. 

Keyboards were quickly set up on stage for Simon, Nick, John, and Roger to play for some of the songs.  I remember Simon once saying how much he disliked playing the piano (documentary option following the 2005 Live from London DVD), so seeing him at a keyboard was rather ironic.  "Last Chance On the Stairway" was one of the keyboard-featured songs.  I only heard this song once and was not a personal favorite.

I was rather keen on Nick at the time and was in straight line vision with him.  I was able, though, to get decent camera shots of all the members. 

Goodies!  A T-shirt, posters, key ring, flip-through book.

I wrote down every song in exact order the next day so I would never forget the set list or the concert memories.

I chose to feature "Red Carpet Massacre" and "The Valley" today for two reasons -

1.  "Red Carpet Massacre" following the title of the album.
2.  "The Valley" is a personal all time favorite.

And so on this Wake Up Monday, I choose to turn up the volume to Duran Duran concert memories.

On May 10, 1982, Rio made its debut.  The profound impact Rio would have in music was unprecedented.  The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were well established in the United States.  In my opinion, Duran Duran was the profound 1980s invasion.

In due belated honor of the Rio release, this Remember When Friday will reflect on the history of the album.

My take away -

Journey is an American classic...as would be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Aerosmith (of course, all three have different sounds).  Steve Perry will forever be the best lead singer in the band.  Yet, I have never known of any band to make so many changes as they did.  When Andy Taylor left Duran Duran, there seemed to be a smooth transition into bringing in Dom Brown as electric guitarist (although only Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John  Taylor, and Roger Taylor are listed as the band members). 

I find Journey to be emotionally driven in tone but in a rock genre way.  On the other hand, I find Chris Botti to be emotionally driven but in a jazz genre way.

My ultimate point is this - Journey, whether with the original members or members coming and going, is an iconic band in musical history.

On May 1, 2010, I stated what to expect on Set List - eclectic.  My taste in music will always be everywhere, from classic rock to classic jazz to smooth jazz to pop to blues...the list could easily go on for some time.

Saturday Specilal : Flash Fiction Series 3

Play It : The Graduation Gift

As she walked across the stage for the last time in her educational career, she could not help but wonder what life had in store for a college graduate with a degree in History.

"You'll be a rock star for a day!"

"What?"

"Your graduation gift.  You get to shadow your favorite band while they rehearse tomorrow afternoon AND stand off stage DURING tomorrow night's concert!  Congratulations, sweetheart."

"Wow.  Thanks Mom!"

The next day was like a dream.  She got to tap on the drums, strum the bass and electric guitars, and warm up her voice by singing alongside the front man.

The concert was amazing.  Standing off stage was as thrilling as walking across one.

Remember When Friday

In this edition of Remember When Friday, I am highlighting Duran Duran's "Is There Something I Should Know" live from London.

Although I am certain I posted "Is There Something I Should Know" in the past, I did not dig through the archives today (where normally I would to remember when).  Instead, I am featuring this song on this particular day because earlier in the week, "Is There Something I Should Know" lyrics were on Twitter as a tune in special.

I have the Live from London concert DVD and am forever in awe of how synchronized the band was within the first second.  I can only imagine how many times they had to practice so that no one member started early.  On cue indeed.

While the opening lyric, "Please, please tell me now" sparks immediate interest, the common agreement on Twitter and Duran Duran fan blogs is the more favorite lyric, "There's a dream that strings the road with broken glass for us to hold."  Admission...I like this lyric too.

Anything Goes Thursday will be random in topic.

I've written posts that are personal in nature.  I've written posts about music, of course.  I think I will post about the blog title "Set List."

Musicians have a set list ready for concerts, knowing what songs to play and the order in which to play them for, I imagine, audience reaction.

I took this "set list" cue when naming this blog.  Creativity driven for the name and the lasting content. 

Set List, as a blog, is not defined by what songs to play and in what order.  Every post has its own direction.  The title is out of pure curiosity.

Eight years strong and Set List as the title is perfect.

In the post, Set List - It's Just One of Those Days, I wrote about genres and songs that best define any given emotion I am feeling.  When I feel intense, I want loud.  When I feel down, I want simple and soothing.  There were two songs that immediately stood out - "Eruption" and "In the Air Tonight."  And so in today's first edition of Wednesday Once Over, I thought I would go into more detail about both.

Two for Two Tuesday - Anniversary Special

Set List is eight years strong on this May 1st. 

I will always remember the excitement I felt with my first published post on a blog I knew would be my career.  I was eager to post every day.  Although some years were devastating, words cannot express how happy I have been so far this year.

My days are themed, so I have structure and purpose.  Therefore, I can successfully move forward.

With that said, I will reflect from the archives on this Two for Two Tuesday - Anniversary Special.

Set List - Rush - May 2, 2010 ... My most well-received post to date.  Highlights -

"For die-hard music enthusiasts, you will know the name of this entry - the band Rush. ... "Tom Sawyer" ... This song, like the band, has an edge and is unique in sound and beat."

"For Disney fanatics, you will know the name of this entry - the song "Rush."  This song was the theme to a recent Disney Channel movie. ... "Rush" is haunting in its fast pace and young beat that clearly attracts any age."

Set List - And All That Jazz - May 4, 2010 ... Clearly defining my eclectic taste in music.  Highlights -
