In this edition of Lauren's Weekly Favorite, I am highlighting "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.
The lyrics to "Crazy" and the official music video to "Crazy" are well established in a psychiatric theme. In my research for the song and for the album, I was unable to find out why this theme was the focal point.
"Crazy" is unique and profound in its message to those suffering from mental illness.
As of 2003, I am being treated for Bipolar Disorder. As of 2004, I am also being treated for Epilepsy. As of 2011, I am further being treated for Panic Disorder. As of 2015, I am self-diagnosed with agoraphobia.
In essence, I can sincerely relate to "Crazy" and especially the opening lyrics -
I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind.
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space
Mental illness is crazy to many, but "Crazy" speaks well to the mentally ill and at least puts a musical beat to psychiatry.
