Wednesday In Style

In previous Wednesday In Style posts, I shared "Avon Lady" look books on the social styling platform, ShopLook.

When I exhausted all available Avon products on ShopLook, I turned to look books featuring the luxury brand, Burberry.

And so in this edition of Wednesday In Style, let's explore Burberry in this post for inspiration.  (This look book was styled on the social styling platform, Fashmates.)  The ultimate destination is the Burberry website.

Classic Versus Tuesday

In this edition of Classic Versus Tuesday, I am briefly going back to my roots with a drum cover and a song.  This post is in honor of Duran Duran's new album, Future Past (release on October 22) and specifically the lead single, "Invisible."

I am not a professional in terms of music review, so I will leave the drum cover and official music video up to you to consider.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1987 No. 10

 Roy Orbison

Inducted by Bruce Springsteen

(Wikipedia)

Roy Orbison's background is extensive and would be exhausting to write here, so refer to Wikipedia for a full reading (career, legacy, discography).

Point of interest - Roy wore sunglasses when performing to help ease his stage fright.  A second point of interest - Bono wears sunglasses to protect his eyes from severe glaucoma.  As for Andy Taylor, I am not sure why he wore sunglasses.

- Noteworthy Mentions -

Grammy Awards
- Best Country Performance Duo or Group (1980)
- Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Recording (1986)*
*Interviews with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Phillips, Rick Nelson, and Chips Moman
- Best Country Vocal Collaboration(1988)
- Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (1989)
- Best Pop Vocal  Performance, Male (1990)

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1998)

Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1987)
Songwriters Hall of Fame (1989)

Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2010)
America's Pop Music Hall of Fame (2014)

Memphis Music Hall of Fame (2017)

Where Roy Orbison's background is at length, his noteworthy honors sum up an impressive history.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1987 No. 9

Ricky (Rick) Nelson

Inducted by John Fogerty

(Wikipedia)

If Ricky Nelson's bio as written on Wikipedia was a resume, his would be intriguing.

Ricky Nelson (later changed to Rick Nelson) was the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson.  The Nelson family held a successful career in radio and on television - The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.  Ricky continued in his own success as a singer, "pop pioneer," actor, and "teen idol."

As an actor beyond his time with his parents' programs, he was a feature in the 1959 film, Rio Bravo, that starred John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Angie Dickinson.

In music -
No. 1 album - Ricky (1957)
No. 1 single - "Poor Little Fool" (1958)

Brief comeback success as a musician -
Stone Canyon Band formed in 1969
Live album success - In Concert at the Troubadour,1969
"Garden Party" (1972) - No. 6 on Billboard Hot 100

Honors -
Golden Globe nomination for "Most Promising Male Newcomer" (1959)

Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were on radio air and television screening at roughly the same time as Jack Benny with his wife and co-stars.  Although Ricky held decent success on his own in music and film, I personally will best associate him with his name as a Nelson.

With that said,

His musical stardom may have been brief but induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will last forever.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1987 No. 8

 Clyde McPhatter

Inducted by Ben E. King

(Wikipedia)

Clyde McPhatter lived a short life, passing away at the age of 39.  In his lifetime, though, Clyde contributed 22 years in recording history.  Read more on Wikipedia.

- Noteworthy Mentions -

Clyde McPhatter was the first musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - once solo and once as a member if his band, the Drifters.

Clyde was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

With that said and referring to Wikipedia for Clyde's career, singles history, and devastating reasons for death, not much else can be said...

...but he is in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history.  That will forever say a lot.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1987 No. 7

 B.B. King

"The King of the Blues"

Inducted by Sting

(Wikipedia)

In Hollywood historic pop culture, Lucille Ball was considered the queen of comedy and Jack Benny was considered the king of comedy.  In historic yet ever evolving music, Aretha Franklin is considered the queen of soul.  B.B. King reigns in his title and so his career and discography stand on their own.

With that said,

- Noteworthy Mentions -

15 Grammy Awards ... 6 Grammy Nominations (1970 - 2009)

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1987)
Grammy Hall of Fame Award for "The Thrill is Gone" (1998)

Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Tougaloo College (1973)
Honorary Doctorate of Music by Yale University (1977)
Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music (1985)
Honorary Doctorate in Music by Brown University (2007)

Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (1980)

National Medal of Arts (1990)
Kennedy Center Honors (1995)
Living Legend Medal from the Library of Congress (2000)
Polar Music Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (2004)
Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (2004)
Presidential Medal of Freedom (by George W. Bush, 2006)

National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA (1991)

No. 3 on Time magazine's 10 Best Electric Guitarists (2009)

One last thought - B.B. King's Lucille Guitar

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 1987 No. 6

 Bill Haley

Rock and Roll Pioneer

Inducted by Chuck Berry

(Wikipedia)

Bill Haley is noted for first popularizing the rock and roll genre with his band, Bill Haley & His Comets.  Some of the most well known songs by Bill Haley include "Rock Around the Clock," "See You Later, Alligator," "Shake, Rattle and Roll," and many more.

Refer to Wikipedia for Bill Haley's full background - career, legacy, and discography.

- Noteworthy Mentions -

"Rock Around the Clock" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1982.
Inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame (2017)

Point of intrigue - Bill Haley once admitted to knowing that teenagers were the best target for his type of music.  His style was meant for people to dance to.

Random thought - In a sense, Duran Duran can be viewed the same way.  Their market was for a matching audience that grew with them.  Every member of Duran Duran desired the want to dance to their songs.  These notions have lasted for years and for following generations.

With that said, the instrumentals musicians play are always in need of crucial accessories - such as strings and picks.

In this post, then, I am sharing Ernie Ball Strings and Dunlop Picks.

Friday Music Library - Astronaut

Friday Music Library features musicians with a long collection in my iTunes Library.

In this edition of Friday Music Library, I am continuing the Duran Duran theme.  My first selection was All You Need Is Now as the album and "All You Need Is Now" as the leading song.

In this post, my next selection is Astronaut.

Notes -
11th studio album
Released in September 2004
Last album to feature the original lineup (after Seven and the Ragged Tiger in 1983)

Noteworthy Mentions -
No. 3 on UK Albums Chart
No. 17 on Billboard 200
Certified Gold in the UK

Concluding note - "Astronaut" is the 4th track on the album.  Where ("Reach Up for The) Sunrise" and "What Happens Tomorrow" maintain the most known from the album, I thought I would give "Astronaut" a try...from song title to album title.

(Although, ("Reach Up for The) Sunrise" is the first track and "What Happens Tomorrow is the third track.)

Burberry is historically known for the trench coat in a variety of named styles and fabric colors.

Burberry is also well known for the iconic check pattern - especially as printed on scarves.  Therefore, the check scarf is a defining product in Burberry history.

With so many to explore, consider the full collection on Burberry.

The example shown below is fundamental to Burberry history and beyond.

Classic Versus Tuesday

Versus Tuesday began with a drum cover and a song.  Versus Tuesday later became Instrumental Versus Tuesday.  Somewhere in between and to now, I have Classic Versus Tuesday - song versus song.

In this classic Versus Tuesday, I am comparing Andy Taylor's solo live versions of "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Wild Boys" in Newcastle with the original Duran Duran live performances of "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Wild Boys" in London.

I have to ask - Is Andy treading on thin ice or does he have shared rights to the songs and performing them in live venues?

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll band.  They are best known as an influence of the doo-wop genre through the 1960s.

On a more positive note, The Coasters were also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.
