Set List Journal Entry #15 - Reminisce Drum Lessons

When I was 15 years old, I visited my father for a few weeks during my summer break.  We agreed that staying at his home all day every day would not be good, so he enrolled me in a class to learn how to play the drums.  

The first day was so much fun.  I was the only student to maintain a beat and this impressed the teacher.  At the end of the lesson, we picked out wooden drum pads and drum sticks...

There was just one problem - my dad didn't live near the building the classroom was in and in fact we had to take the highway.  By the time he got home to pick me up and head out, rush hour hit and I missed my second class.  At that point, too much was missed to go back to a third lesson.

Sadly, I decided to walk away.

My cousin once offered to teach me but too there was a distance.

From time to time, I wonder how hard it could be to play the drums, especially for rock music.  I look to so many favorite drummers and they make playing seem so easy and natural.  Of course the drums, like any other instrument or even vocal, are an artform with requisite patience, daily practice, and playing just to play.

I missed my chance.  

On that note, I will conclude  Set List Journal Entry #15.

Duran Duran's debut album put them on the map and into profound fame they did not see coming.  Roger Taylor was the most affected and briefly left the band.  DD, if you will, caught the attention of so many worldwide.  They were another British invasion in the United States.  They ranked well at the top on Princess Diana's favorite bands.  In fact, she was known to dress as a boy to bypass royal security so she could see Duran Duran.  In a sense, both she and the band were trailblazers.

Where normally I post reader favorites on Sundays, I have taken to post my Sunday favorite - my own way (Rio).

My choice for today is "Tel Aviv," an underrated song in my opinion.  Where every note hit by Simon, Nick, Amdy, John, and Roger is spot on and electric especially going live, pure instrumentals are intriguing.  "Tel Aviv" in one word is haunting.

As I settle into a new year in my life, I cannot help but look back at when I officially settled into my time with zZounds.

When I approached zZounds with an application to be an affiliate, I did not know what to expect - would they say yes, say no, carefully considered before replying.  At the end of the day, I was lucky to get approved - my first yes in a long time and for anything.

As an affiliate, you know what to expect yet I never know what to expect - did I catch your attention, did I spark interest or intrigue, is there a brand your passionate about, budget always...being an affiliate marketer is challenging but also fun because I get to share my interests, my favorite instrumentals, and budget awareness.  If I can afford, can you?

I will leave my reminiscing down memory lane on that question.

Gibson has so much to offer to musicians, from budding guitarists with grand hopes to pros knowing Gibson is a must to play on stage or in the recording studio to collectors knowing Gibson is a must treasure.

One pro worth noting is Andy Taylor, who prefers Gibson.  Yes, by the way, he will be reuniting the band at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November.

Sunday Choice - My Own Way

Sunday is always devoted to reader's choice throughout the week but a few posts were too close to call and remaining others best stand on their own, so in this Sunday choice I am going my own way - my choice.

In the post just before this one, I touched on Epiphone and Gibson as guitar goodies as brought  to you by zZounds.  In this post, I am sharing a brief history behind both brands.

The Epiphone brand launched in 1873 in Smyrna, Greece and moved to New York City in 1908.  In 1928, the Epiphone name became official for the brand in a unique way.  "Epi" was the nickname of the owner and "phone" Greek for voice...Epiphone.  Also in 1928, guitars became the staple production.

In 1957, Gibson bought Epiphone.  All production was moved to Gibson's manufacturing plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Side note - Epiphone has become a global producer in the United States, Japan, Korea, and China.

Epiphone is well known for budget friendly guitars, such as the Epiphone Les Paul - as compared to the Gibson Les Paul.

"Love Hurts" was originally written by the American composer, Boudleaux Bryant, but became best known in 1974 by the hard rock Scottish band, Nazareth.  The Nazareth take is the most popular version of "Love Hurts."

Duran Duran has been on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame radar since 2007.  Why they were never inducted at the time comes with reasons I will never know.  All that is said now is November 5, 2022 - the formal ceremony with a speech by Nick Rhodes himself already prepared.
