Who is Ricky Nelson?

Ricky Nelson

In this edition of the history of Billboard Hot 100, I am highlighting Ricky Nelson - the artist behind "Poor Little Fool" and the song being the first No. 1 on the newly created Billboard Hot 100 (1958).

Who is Ricky Nelson?

Prior to television, at home entertainment was through radio programs sponsored by in demand products and major networks.  The most iconic performer and proclaimed king of comedy was Jack Benny.  The next best in radio sitcom humor was The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet with their two sons along side.  Ricky, though, stood out the most.

And so who is Ricky Nelson?

Fame in radio, television, and film as of 1957

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987

No. 49 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time

Ricky - No. 1 album (1957)

Golden Globe nomination (1959)

Ricky Nelson's career in music specifically failed to maintain consistent success with career ups and lack of impressive downs.  He may have been well known if by name only but critics were less than with regards to singles and albums.

As a film actor, on the other hand, Nelson landed proof of being considered  with the movie, Rio Bravo (1959).

Sadly, Ricky "Rick" Nelson's life was cut short in a plane crash.

May 8, 1940 - December 31, 1985
