1984 -
Prince was the first singer to have a No. 1 film, album, and single in the U.S. at the same time - Purple Rain, Purple Rain Soundtrack, and "When Doves Cry" (No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100).  The album, recorded with the backing band the Revolution, remained at No. 1 on Billboard 200 for six consecutive months.  The album further won an Academy Award.  The film grossed $70.3 million worldwide and is considered one of the greatest musical films.

The film, Purple Rain, is preserved in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress (as of 2019).

After the Revolution broke up, Prince recorded Sign o' the Times in 1987.  This album is considered his greatest.

In 1993, Prince changed his stage name to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince or just The Artist.  He went back to Prince in 2000.

Prince's discography includes 39 albums recorded and released.  He also has several unreleased works including completed albums and over 50 music videos.  The number of songs written by Prince ranges from 500 to over 1,000.

Prince has sold over 100 million records worldwide - one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
